Social Enterprise to be taken seriously? |

There are signs that at last the area of social enterprise is going to be taken seriously at government level. The speech by the Minister at the Guinness Awards last week were positive about the social enterprises that were awarded prizes at the event; not only the social impact of these organisations but also the job creation element that is often forgotten by government and its agencies. |

The next Module on Social Enterprise Development is being held over 2 consecutive Fridays on 7th & 14th May in the DCU Ryan Academy, Citywest Business Campus. This programme has been successfully run twice so far, and is aimed at social entrepreneurs, middle-to-senior management in all manner of social enterprises, voluntary and charity groups as well as board members of social enterprises. |

With the current downturn there are a lot of people either being made redundant or are taking early retirement. Is this an opportunity for the social, voluntary and charity sector? The US firm Civic Ventures in a survey in 2009 identified that 58% of 50 year olds surveyed in the U.S. said they wanted a second career that would make their community a better place. One of the issues in the sector is a lack of manpower and professional skills in key areas. |

There is an excellent article in this months Stanford Social Innovation Review on 'merging wisely' for the nonprofit sector. As we have mentioned here before, there will be increased pressure to merge in the wider non-profit or more-than-profit sector. Some of this will be due to financial pressures (not the best starting point to look for a partner) and in some cases because there is too much replication in many of the sub-sectors of the social space in general (too many, too small). This includes the voluntary and charity areas. |
