Rockfield Build a Home for the Community Print E-mail

Having spent more than a lifetime creating a community anyone could be proud of, the people of Rockfield, outside Ballyshannon are about to build their very own Community Centre next the local National School, with assistance from UCIT (Ireland).

The progressive committee, responsible for the management of Rockfield Community Co-op Ltd., have been making themselves very busy over the last 12 months compiling what has transpired to be a succesful application to the Rural Development Programme via Donegal Local Development Company. This has culminated in the group accessing grant funds in excess of €150,000 towards the development costs.

So what's planned you might ask? Well the group have secured a long term lease from the diocese on which to build their new centre which expects to become the focal point of all community activity within the locale. It is especially greared towards facilitaing the numerous clubs and groups active in the area and vying for a suitable community based venue in which to meet on a regular basis.

Of course annual gatherings at various times  of the year are also keenly anticipated. Indeed even some corporates have approached the group to hire the building for training and external meeting purposes when complete.

The group are being ably assisted by a local architect and should be commended on their design which is very much a "does exactly what it says on the tin" proposal. The business model attached to the centre should ensure long term susutainbility and UCIT (Ireland) are pleased to be in a position to assist the group at this early stage.

Works are due to commence in the coming weeks, and should take a couple of months to complete.
