Colgan Hall Commences Upgrade |
|
|
The committee responsible for Colgan Community & Resource Centre certainly aren't afraid to get their hands dirty! Having taken over the reins at the centre just 7 years ago, the group have already accomplished a significant amount, but are not set to rest on their laurels any time soon.
By 2007 they had obtained planning permission for ambitious plans to refurbish the building as well as providing for an extension. This was followed up with a feasibility report in 2009 confirming the group's strategy with regard to all capital works.
The downturn in the economy, with the resultant decrease in funding availability meant a change of strategy. Not to be deterred however, in 2010 they updated the hall by improving ventilation, rewiring the building, installing new sound, light and projection facilities along with associated building work. Total cost was €209,000 with €59,000 coming from their own fundraising and an Inishowen Development Partnership Grant of €150,000.
For many committees, this would be job well done, move on and leave the rest to a new batch of recruits. Not the case here however, as a lack of access to those with disabilities were major outstanding requirements and the group became committed to addressing the issues via an extension (the listed status of the building restricted internal works).
All this, and the group have also managed to raise funding in excess of €110,000 towards their efforts. Marketing Executive, Trudi Dunbar recently paid a visit to Carndonagh to coincide with the presenting of €150,000 worth of investment from UCIT (Ireland) towards the development. Trudi was remarkably impressed with the plans and enthusiasm of the committee, citing the project as an inspiration for what many other groups up and down the country dealing with similar type community halls could realise. The group were also granted assistance on this particluar phase from the Rural Development Programme via Inishowen Development Partnership.
